Cavs mulling waive-and-stretch on Cam Whitmore

Cleveland has waived Cam Whitmore, per HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, eight days after acquiring him from Washington in the five-team sign-and-trade that brought Peyton Watson from Denver.

Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com had reported the Cavs were weighing a waive-and-stretch of the $5.4 million left on his deal, which would cut his 2026-27 cap charge to roughly $1.8 million across three seasons and open about $3.6 million under the first apron, where Cleveland is hard-capped after re-signing James Harden at a reported figure just above $30 million.

The decision came a day before the August 29 deadline to stretch 2026-27 guaranteed salary. Whitmore, the 20th pick in 2023, has averaged 10.5 points in 17.3 minutes over three seasons with Houston and Washington.

The Cavs would then need to fill the roster spot, possibly with Ismael Kamagate, whose draft rights they also acquired.
