Olynyk nears agreement to sign with BC Roma in Italy
UpdateOlynyk leaves NBA for Italy, agrees to deal with BC Roma
Kelly Olynyk has an agreement in principle to join newly formed BC Roma in Italy's Serie A and EuroCup, leaving the NBA after reaching the Finals last season with San Antonio.
Italian outlet Superbasket reports the deal is on track to close soon. The club was co-founded by Lakers guard Luka Doncic, who remains a minority owner.
The 35-year-old forward/center is expected to sign within days, after averaging 3.2 points in 8.6 minutes across 42 games for the Spurs last season, a steep drop from his 12 years as a regular rotation player.
He had drawn interest from the Warriors and Spurs this summer and even trained with Spurs players in Paris, but Golden State filled its floor-spacing need with Georges Niang and San Antonio was wary of crossing the tax line for a 15th man. Roma hopes to have him ready for an October 11 derby against Maxima Roma.
