Marcus Smart signs multi-year deal with Rockets
Marcus Smart has agreed to a two-year, $12.4 million deal with Houston, below the $13 million first reported, with a player option for year two, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. He reunites with Ime Udoka, his former Celtics coach now running the Rockets backcourt.
Smart called the Lakers' offer disrespectful, saying it didn't match his production and lacked the security he wanted. He had been on a two-year, $10.5 million deal with Los Angeles, averaging 9.3 points, 3.0 assists and 1.4 steals last season.
Los Angeles spent elsewhere this offseason, extending Austin Reaves and adding Walker Kessler and Quentin Grimes.
Lakers insider Jovan Buha said he lacks full clarity on the split but understood Smart was ready to move on. Smart, 32, joins a Rockets roster built around Kevin Durant, Alperen Şengün, Amen Thompson and Fred VanVleet.
