Kessler still out for Lakers after jamming finger in camp

Walker Kessler has missed the Lakers' first three preseason games after jamming his finger on the backboard during training camp. Kessler says the finger is "good" and he's working through return protocols with team staff.

Coach JJ Redick said he isn't concerned and expects Kessler to play before the preseason ends, though neither offered a firm return date. Kevon Looney and Sandro Mamukelashvili have started at center in his absence, with Mamukelashvili shooting well in limited minutes.

Kessler appeared in just five games last season due to season-ending labrum surgery before the Lakers acquired him this offseason.

Kessler's camp pushed hard to leave Utah, per Stein

Marc Stein reports Walker Kessler's camp told Jazz officials he was determined to reach unrestricted free agency rather than stay in Utah, taking the qualifying offer route if needed. That stance contrasts with a June Instagram post in which Kessler said he always wanted to remain in Utah.
