Duren set to skip Pistons media day amid contract standoff
UpdateDuren says he's glad talks with Pistons didn't blow up deal
Jalen Duren skipped Detroit's media day and the start of training camp, ESPN's Shams Charania reports, confirming what The Athletic's Sam Amick and Hunter Patterson had expected. He faces a Thursday deadline to sign a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer or reach an extension.
Duren turned down a five-year, $287 million offer and later Detroit's five-year, $200 million proposal, which was fully guaranteed but had no options and included weight stipulations his camp disliked.
NBA insider Keith Smith says league sources increasingly expect Duren to take the qualifying offer, becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Sacramento and Milwaukee have serious interest, but Detroit has refused to discuss a sign-and-trade involving Domantas Sabonis or Myles Turner. Duren, an All-NBA selection last season, believes he can land a max deal next summer by taking the qualifying offer.
